History of StarBED Project

1st Project: StarBED

Apr. 20, 2002 The Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan (TAO) opened the Hokuriku IT Open Laboratory.
Apr. 20, 2002 Start of the construction and of the operation of StarBED as a large-scale, general-use internet simulator connecting 512 PC servers (nodes) by network switches and maintaining the plant and equipment.


2nd Project: StarBED2

Apr. 1, 2006 168 PC servers were added : A total of 680 nodes
Jun. 17, 2006 Opening of the Hokuriku Research Center.
Commenced research and development of next-generation ubiquitous network simulation technology as the NICT’s onsite research and development facility.
Apr. 1, 2007 150 PC servers were added : A total of 830 nodes

This system can perform comprehensive experiments and verifications for hundreds to a million node level.

3rd Project: StarBED3 (StarBED Cubic)

Apr. 1, 2011 Opening of the Hokuriku StarBED Technology Center as the research institution for the NICT' Network Testbed Research and Development Promotion Center.
Commenced, as a large-scale emulation testbed, research and development, set targets for dealing with and R&D life cycle support for the new-generation ICT system, and continued planning mutual coordination with JGN-X.
Apr. 1, 2011 512 PC servers used for ten years were discarded.
552 PC servers of high specification were newly added : A total of 1,110 nodes.

4th Project: StarBED4 (StarBED Force)

Apr. 1, 2016 Commenced StarBED4 project to apply our research achievements of the 3rd-term project of StarBED3 to public.
Thus all things around humans and human themselves are connected to the network in the IoT generation, we started R&D activities to develop evaluation infrastructure for the generation which enables to introduce these entities and physical phenomena such as human behavior, cellar phones, sensors, and temperature and electromagnetic fields that connect these elements.
